Pieces of Eight

Pieces of Eight were the main currency used in South and Central America. This currency was equivalent to eight Spanish reales. A small quantity of these would be considered a fortune. Therefore they were highly desired by pirates.
They were not created to be aesthetic marvels, therefore some turned out pretty rough, more square than round. Pieces of Eight, also known as "pesos" or properly as "eight reales", were so popular that the twin pillars stamped on the coin have transformed into the '$' we use today.
